Women’s Conditions and Symptoms
Uterine Fibroids
Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths of the uterine muscle. They are very common, affecting up to 80% of women by the time they reach menopause. Fibroids can cause a variety of symptoms, including heavy menstrual bleeding, prolonged menstruation, pelvic pressure or pain, and infertility.
Uterine artery embolization (UAE) is a minimally invasive procedure that can be used to treat uterine fibroids. In UAE, a catheter is inserted into the uterine artery and small particles are injected to block the blood flow to the fibroids. This causes the fibroids to shrink and die. UAE is a very effective treatment for uterine fibroids. It is usually done as an outpatient procedure and does not require general anesthesia. The recovery time is short, and most women are able to return to their normal activities within a few days.
The best treatment for uterine fibroids depends on the individual woman’s circumstances. Factors that may be considered include the size and location of the fibroids, the woman’s age and desire for future fertility, and her overall health.
If you are experiencing symptoms of uterine fibroids, it is important to see a doctor to get a diagnosis and discuss treatment options.
Uterine Adenomyosis
Uterine adenomyosis is a condition in which endometrial tissue, the tissue that lines the inside of the uterus, grows into the muscle of the uterus. This can cause a variety of symptoms, including heavy menstrual bleeding, prolonged menstruation, pelvic pain, and infertility.

Pelvic Congestion Syndrome
Pelvic congestion syndrome (PCS) is a condition that causes enlarged veins in the pelvis. These enlarged veins can cause chronic pain in the abdomen, legs, or lower back. PCS is caused by a problem with the valves in the veins of the pelvis. These valves normally prevent blood from flowing backward, but in people with PCS, the valves don’t work properly. This allows blood to flow backward, causing the veins to enlarge.
The symptoms of PCS can vary from person to person. Some people may experience only mild pain, while others may have severe pain that interferes with their daily activities. Other symptoms of PCS can include:
- Pressure or fullness in the pelvis
- Pain during or after sex
- Painful periods
- Leg swelling
- Fatigue
There is no cure for PCS, but there are treatments that can help relieve the symptoms. One treatment option is pelvic vein occlusion (PVO). In PVO, a catheter is inserted into a vein in the leg and threaded up to the veins in the pelvis. Small particles are then injected into the veins to block the blood flow. This causes the veins to shrink and the pain to improve.
If you are experiencing symptoms of PCS, it is important to see a doctor to get a diagnosis and discuss treatment options.
May-Thurner Syndrome
May-Thurner syndrome (MTS) is a rare condition that occurs when the right common iliac artery compresses the left common iliac vein. This compression can restrict blood flow through the vein, which can lead to a number of symptoms, including:
- Pain in the left leg, especially after standing or sitting for long periods of time
- Swelling in the left leg
- Skin changes, such as redness, warmth, or discoloration
- Thrombosis, or the formation of a blood clot in the vein
- Ulcers on the skin of the leg
In some cases, MTS may not cause any symptoms. However, if you do experience any of the symptoms listed above, it is important to see a doctor. MTS can be diagnosed with a physical examination and imaging tests, such as an ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
Hemorrhoids
Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the rectum and anus. They are a common problem, affecting up to 50% of adults at some point in their lives. Hemorrhoids can be either internal or external. Internal hemorrhoids develop inside the rectum, while external hemorrhoids develop under the skin around the anus. The most common symptoms of hemorrhoids are bleeding, pain, itching, and a feeling of fullness in the anal area.
Minimally invasive treatments for hemorrhoids are usually done in an outpatient setting and do not require general anesthesia. They are generally effective in relieving the symptoms of hemorrhoids, and the recurrence rate is low.
If you are experiencing symptoms of hemorrhoids, it is important to see a doctor to get a diagnosis and discuss treatment options.
Joint Pain
Joint pain is a common symptom that can affect people of all ages. It can be caused by a variety of factors, including arthritis, injury, and overuse. The pain can be mild or severe, and it can range from a dull ache to a sharp, stabbing pain.
